The Best Movies Based on Games That Didn't Actually Exist
There are A LOT of movies that are based on existing video games. Some of these movies are great, most are pretty bad and A LOT more of them are coming such as titles for Minecreaft & Five Nights at Freddy's!
Tons of video-game movies are out there including documentaries about Indie Games, short and unofficial films. Games have inspired lots of flicks!
However, gaming has been SO inspirational that there actually loads of movies about games that don't even exist!
And so! We're listing the best movies based on gaming that did NOT take from existing games at the time of their release.
Wreck It Ralph
An arcade game baddie who dreams of being a real hero! This amazing movie featured TONS of cameos by actual game characters like Pac-Man, Sonic and way more!
But the movie was also packed with great, fictional arcade games WITHIN the movie itself - and Ralph was a completly original character. You can actually now play Fix-It Felix Jr., Sugar Rush Speedway and Hereo's Duty online!
Tron & Tron Legacy
The original TRON movie was the first of its kind to tell a story about a game that didn't exist in real-life. The original story follows an arcade game designer who gets sucked into the video game world he created and has to fight his way back to the real world!
Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over
A YTV fave! Carmen Cortez is caught in a virtual reality game designed by their new nemesis, the Toymaker. Juni, her little brother, goes into the game to save her as well as beta players and the world.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
This action comedy movie was jam packed with video game references and the storyline was very, very similar to that of classic arcade fighting games.
The Last Starfighter
Goin' OLD-SCHOOL! The Last Starfighter centers around a boy, who is very good at the STARFIGHTER arcade game in his trailer park. In fact, he's so good that he ends up finding himself recruited to be a pilot for an alien defense force just like the game he plays.
Cloak & Dagger
...and keepin' it old-school! A young boy has secret plans given to him in the form of a video game cartridge of Cloak & Dagger, which he must protect from spies. There was a game made for the Atari 5200 (OLD!) and it even appears in the movie itself, however the game was never completed nor was it ever released!
BONUS ENTRY #1: "Chimp Chomp" game from Fanboy & Chum Chum
The Chimp Chomp game was made famous by one our fave animated series' ever! Click the arcade box below to play it for real!
BONUS ENTRY #2: The Wizard
We bend the rules a bit with another old school entry. The movie, THE WIZARD featured a high-stakes video game tournament and served as the world's introduction to Super Mario Bros. 3. This movie proved to serve as being a giant commercial for one of the greatest games ever that wasn't yet available when the film was released.
...the movie also flaunted the ill-fated NES Powerglove...a lot. It was weird.
